If it’s bold gold they’re looking for, well, here it is. Los Angeles–based Evangeline Jewelry has brought us a bold, weighty style that combines old-world and modern aesthetics.
“I was enchanted by the romantic imagery of sunlight filtered through wispy clouds, and wanted to create a piece of jewelry to illustrate this,” designer Evangeline Porche says. “I carved the form in beeswax, letting the texture emerge naturally to evoke the wispy, fluid quality of clouds in motion.”
The ring’s name speaks to that fluid quality: Cirrus is, poetically, evocative of the ephemeral, of fleeting beauty, of the divine (as in, mythological deities of the sky).
The Cirrus ring’s sky association is further embraced through its center stone, a 2.2 ct. rainbow moonstone that’s been faceted—something you don’t see every day with moonstone. “The rainbow moonstone from Madagascar was chosen for its luminous adularescence that mirrors light filtering through vapor,” Porche says. “Its shifting glow completes the piece, turning gold and stone into a moment of sky captured in jewelry.”
There’s a striking juxtaposition between gem and metal here—the stone polished, luminescent, and colorful; the cigar-style band exhibiting a raw, almost primal quality, its curving lines—which might easily be taken for snakes—against a textured field of gold.
We could go on, of course, about the design elements that make this ring so special, but in current times, we’d be remiss not addressing the elephant in the room: all that gold. “The gold price increase has been a challenge, as I tend to gravitate towards making bold statement pieces,” Porche acknowledges.
As we’ve said before, though, cost doesn’t seem to stand in the way of a great, enduring gold jewel for many customers. Porche sees that too. “Though I try my best to consider the weight when creating new designs, sometimes I have to respect what the vision and materials call for,” she says. “In my experience, customers are starting to reject fast-fashion and gravitating towards investing in a single special piece, which is encouraging.”
