Britt’s Pick: Cora Sheibani’s Disco Ring

Share

I’m not breaking news with today’s selection—this is no “you saw it here first” proclamation.

And that, in itself, is proof that a jewel can inspire awe whether it came out last year, is 20 years old, or has been around for a century or more—a sentiment reinforced by the steady consumer appetite for vintage and archival designs.

This Disco ring is a standout of Cora Sheibani’s 2019 Glow collection, and it’s clear from the first glance that it is no ordinary piece. But what makes it truly extraordinary is something you can’t see at all, unless you happen to have a black light handy (or are a frequent attendee of raves).

The ring’s 2.5+ ct. internally flawless, D-color diamond is impressive enough—yet it has a secret weapon, too: a strong fluorescence, which causes it to glow dramatically under ultraviolet light. This otherworldly effect is showcased beautifully in Cora Sheibani Jewels, the ACC Art Books monograph that our Amy Elliott covered a few years back.

Fluorescence in a diamond is not universally celebrated; sometimes it even lowers a stone’s cost or reduces its brilliance. Not so in the case of this special Sheibani gem—fluorescence is central to the ring’s design, not a flaw but rather the entire point.

Adding to the impact are kite-shape spinels that line the geometric band, their angular forms helping to create the tactile pattern of the setting. The overall effect is almost serpentine: coiled, powerful, exotic—beautiful, with just a hint of danger.

While this is a one-of-a-kind piece, its form works well for any occasion, including engagement ring—and elongated diamonds, like the one on the Disco ring, are among the biggest recent engagement ring trends.

Meanwhile, the geometric pattern on the band, echoed by the eternity setting of gemstones that extends up and around the center stone, is one I long to see more of. Sheibani’s expert hand does it so very well.
