Britt’s Pick: Brooke Gregson’s Kaleidoscope Heart Ring

Surely you’ve heard people say they don’t like heart jewelry. It’s too on-the-nose, cheesy, cliché, they might say.

I used to feel this way about hearts, but it’s a narrow-minded attitude, one conditioned from growing up in the mall era—with jewelry kiosks at the center of the mall where your junior high school sweetheart would go and pick out the most saccharine piece of heart jewelry to convey that puppy love (which you so believed was the be-all, end-all).

And you know what? There’s nothing wrong with those hearts at all—they were important, indicative of that time in your life, sweet, youthful.

But hearts can be grown up and sophisticated, too, as designers have proved time and time again, persuading even the staunchest heart jewel opponent to crumble. For every argument against the style, you can find amazing jewels to change your mind. The latest to demonstrate that is Brooke Gregson’s gorgeously crafted Kaleidoscope ring.

This romantic one-of-a-kind piece set in 18k yellow gold is named for the kaleidoscopic display of enamel that sits like a collar around the heart-shape center stone. “The pink tourmaline was selected from a Brazilian gem source and picked for its rare pink-peach tone,” Gregson says. “I wanted the ring to resemble a radiant heart. The heart can radiate an unseen aura, and the colors were chosen from different combinations of my watercolors.”

Beneath those colors, Gregson’s signature hand-engraved texture looks like sunrays shining through. “The engraved rays accentuate the enamel overlay,” Gregson says. “The ring was formed from hand-forged 18k gold sheet metal to create a three-dimensional quality. I wanted this ring to show the energy that can radiate from the tourmaline heart.”

In doing so, the ring seems to take on a life of its own, one that exemplifies the irresistible pull of beautifully created heart jewelry.
