The first Britt’s Pick of 2024 was a cuff bracelet from Parisian jeweler Ashaha—an intriguing plexiglass statement set with blue opal and diamonds. The piece, by the name of Dehya, was bold, bright, and refreshing, utilizing a rare material for fine jewelry but still bringing light to that opal at the center of it all.
Now I’m sharing another Ashaha creation—this pair of earrings from the company’s Mini Hiba line. Ashaha once again makes a statement surrounding opal, without taking away from the gemstone’s luminescence.
Keeping with the brand’s form of modern elegance, the earrings’ matte gold provides a refined setting for the opals, as the materials come together in a harmonious way. Despite opal’s realm of color and mystery, here they’re part of a design that feels grounding, intentional, and—obviously—gorgeous.
Opals were already having a major designer moment, but consumers might come to recognize them even more thanks to Taylor Swift. Track 3 on her latest album is called “Opalite,” and it’s widely understood to be about Swift’s fiancé, Travis Kelce (whose birthstone happens to be opal). While the song itself is about finding love after heartbreak, gem hounds might appreciate some of its lyrics: “You were dancing through the lightning strike, sleepless in the onyx night, But now the sky is opalite.”
Opal and opalite are not the same thing—opalite typically refers to a synthetic, generally less expensive stone similar in look to the opal. Still, the scene set by Swift through her song calls to all manner of opals, painting a picture of a watercolor sky, much like what you see in the mesmerizing stone itself.
Ashaha’s softly geometric Hiba earrings are the perfect option for shoppers on the hunt for opal, whether for an October birthday, a Swiftie, or an avid gemstone lover. What sets them apart from many other opal jewels on the market is their mix of classic and modern: The design is both understated and statement-making, with an everlasting luxuriousness that make the pair worth the splurge on gold.
You’ve got to see how they look on the ear—like modern armor for the coolest of cool jewelry-wearers. Ashaha offers its Hiba earrings in a wide range of colors and materials, but opal is the style for here and now (and beyond).
