Here’s another ruby jewel to persuade even the most skeptical of July’s birthstone: a special collaboration between London jeweler Alex Monroe and London graphic designer–turned-jeweler Balint Samad.
Created to celebrate Monroe’s 40th anniversary, the hypnotic snake ring marries the designer’s gift for storytelling with Samad’s signature gemstone-setting style. A total of 76 rubies in various sizes, sourced from Madagascar and Mozambique, are scattered across the serpent’s body, creating an organic pattern that evokes the texture and shimmer of snakeskin.

Much like the recent collaboration between Polly Wales and Castro Smith, this piece is born from the dialogue between two distinct creative voices. The matte 18k yellow gold and engraved starburst—both handcrafted in Monroe’s London studio—reflect the nature-inspired aesthetic that has long defined the brand.
At the center of the starburst sits a hand-set marquise ruby, one of 76 stones carefully placed by Samad in his Edinburgh workshop. Together, the engraved motif and vivid gemstone lend the ring a subtle talismanic quality, as though the ruby radiates light from within.
More than just an irresistible showcase for ruby, the ring reflects a broader movement toward jewelry that blends exceptional craftsmanship with a sense of whimsy. Despite its serpent form, it avoids the familiar tropes of snake jewelry. There’s nothing sinister, seductive, or intimidating here. Instead, it’s warm, playful, and undeniably sculptural—a celebration of nature rendered with extraordinary artistry. It’s the kind of snake ring that might even win over someone who doesn’t like snakes—simply because it’s such a compelling piece of jewelry.
