Van Cleef & Arpels, Cartier, and Boucheron Highlight Bonhams’ Fine Jewelry Sale

Bonhams brings 304 lots to its Fine Jewelry sale in L.A. on July 28—from loose fancy colored diamonds to antique pieces, signed designs, and more.

The diamond category is led by a 60+ ct. platinum necklace set with pear, oval, and marquise stones (pictured above). It carries an estimate of $30,000 to $50,000 and is offered without reserve. That range works out to possibly more than $800 per carat. No lab report is provided for the necklace, and the catalog doesn’t provide any grading context—an omission trade buyers pricing similar necklaces will want to weigh alongside the per-carat math.

Other diamond pieces on the block include a circa-1950 necklace with 18.5 cts. t.w. old European– and old mine–cut diamonds and 7.6 cts. pear-shape drops (below) and a line necklace of graduated round diamonds suspending a detachable diamond and ruby pendant (estimate $18,000–$22,000).

Bonhams is also featuring a Van Cleef & Arpels 18k gold Ludo bracelet from the 1930s, its brick link design accented with old European– and single-cut diamonds, oval cabochon emeralds, and black enamel (below). From Boucheron, there’s a 1940 diamond scroll-style brooch with clustered bead accents and tapered gas pipe drops in gold, estimated at $15,000–$20,000. (The “gas pipe” terminology is period-accurate in a way estate dealers will appreciate.)

The top Cartier lot in the sale comprises a pair of circa-1990 gold hoop-shape earclips accented with black enamel tiger stripes, estimated at $10,000 to $20,000. The earrings’ motif draws from the same bestiary inspiration as the Panthère line, which has anchored Cartier’s secondary-market demand for decades.

Among the colored stone highlights are a platinum ring centering a 7.06 ct. rectangular cushion-cut purple sapphire flanked by trilliant-cut diamonds ($18,000 to $22,000) and a mid-1920s brooch with a 54 ct. octagonal mixed-cut aquamarine in an art deco diamond openwork setting. The latter’s $5,000–$7,000 estimate is modest for a stone of that size and a piece of that period.
