Single-Owner David Webb Collection to Headline Bonhams’ Los Angeles Sale

Share

On March 5, Bonhams will host its Fine Jewelry California auction in Los Angeles, anchored by a significant single-owner collection of 12 iconic David Webb designs. While the sale features a broad range of signed pieces and high-carat diamonds, this curated group of Webb jewels serves as the focal point, illustrating the American jeweler’s signature use of bold, sculptural gold and whimsical animal motifs that have remained a staple of 20th-century design.

The Webb collection includes several notable examples of the house’s craftsmanship, such as an 18k gold Celtic crescent necklace (pictured at top) from the early 1970s, estimated at $25,000–$35,000. Other lots include a rock crystal frog clip brooch with emerald eyes and a meticulously carved scallop shell hinged cuff in hammered 18k gold.

Beyond the specific designer curation, the auction is led by high-value diamond lots that cater to the demand for significant carat weights. The top lot is an 18k white gold bracelet featuring 29.21 cts. t.w. of square emerald-cut diamonds with VVS1-VS2 clarity, boasting an estimate of $55,000–$75,000. It is joined by a matching necklace containing 27.61 cts. t.w. of square, modified brilliant-cut diamonds, estimated at $38,000–$48,000.

The lineup also includes items of historic provenance, including rare pieces from Tiffany & Co. and Van Cleef & Arpels. Of particular note is a Tiffany sapphire ring from 1915 featuring a cushion-shape stone of Kashmir origin. Additionally, a 13.25 ct. tourmaline pendant-brooch designed by Louis Comfort Tiffany circa 1911 provides a look into the early–20th century Arts and Crafts movement.

Caroline Morrissey, Bonhams senior vice president and head of jewelry, explained that the sale is designed to merge important period designs with exceptional colored gemstones, balancing modern diamond designs with rare signed heritage pieces.
