Best of IIJW 2012

As New York City gears up for Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Sept. 6–13 (look for coverage in the October issue of JCK!), what better time for a look back at India’s fashion week—aka the Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council’s India International Jewellery Week, held Aug. 19–23 in Mumbai? Here are five of the chicest, most sparkling highlights from the runway:

1. Amrapali

Capitalizing on everyone’s ongoing craze with green stones, Hollywood fave Amrapali partnered with emerald guru Gemfields for its Panna Collection packed with multistrand necklaces and intricate, exotic ornaments.

2. YS 18

Intergem Exports tapped artist Yogendra Sethi to create YS 18’s Champagne and Lace Collection, an Art Deco–inspired line full of glistening rose cuts and clusters of colorful briolettes.

3. Madhura Bhogle

The International Gemological Institute showcased the work of four designers—including Madhura Bhogle’s Mughal Collection, made by Shivkumar Agrawal of Shabham Motiwala—in its runway show. This Raani Haar (bridal jewelry set), with a spectacular pendant of sapphires, emeralds, diamonds, and rubies, was a particular standout.

4. Birdhichand Ghanshyamdas

Earth, water, wind, and fire themes ran throughout the Birdhichand Ghanshyamdas show, designed to complement the brand’s new nature-influenced Aranya collection. This stunning water selection features flowing rows of uncut and flat-cut diamonds and floral gemstone accents.

5. Jewels Emporium

Jewels Emporium called its collection “A Symphony of Showstoppers.” Fortunately, the title wasn’t simply hyperbole. It’s almost impossible to pick a favorite among all the jaw-dropping jewels, but we were completely wowed by this flame-colored flower pendant with its coordinating cocktail ring, drop earrings, and bangle stack.
