A Chanel emerald and ruby ring was the top prize in the Bonhams & Butterfields Jewelry and Watches sale, held March 16 at the auction house’s Los Angeles location.
The ring was sold for $15,860, approximately five times its pre auction estimate of $2,500 to $3,500. The total auction took in $640,506.
“The market for unique pieces and signed works continues to be strong,” said Deborah Boskin, Bonhams & Butterfields jewelry specialist. “Bidding was robust throughout the day, underscoring the continued strength of the jewelry market and continued appetite for fresh-to-market jewelry in a variety of styles and periods, many by famous makers.”
Other big sellers included a jadeite diamond and enamel bracelet for $7,320; an aquamarine, diamond, and ruby pendant necklace for $6,710; and a diamond ring also for $6,710.
In addition, a pair of ivory, diamond, and enamel cufflinks from Cartier sold for $6,100.
