AstaGuru’s Upcoming Auction Is an Ode to Art Deco Jewels

Mumbai, India–based auction house AstaGuru will host a fine jewelry sale Oct. 20-21 that pays particular tribute to the influential art deco movement. From handmade bajubands circa the 1920s and 1930s to a Tutti Frutti–inspired Burmese ruby and diamond suite, the auction has 125 lots. AstaGuru’s jewelry expert, Jay Sagar, elaborates on some of the highlights here.

Bajubands
A pair of handmade art deco bajubands with approximately 115 cts. t.w. old-cut diamonds and approximately 160 cts. t.w. calibre-cut natural Burmese rubies, estimate: $100,000– $125,000

“These impressive handmade bajubands were made for a royal family and are pure art deco, dating back to the late ’20s or early ’30s,” says Sagar. “They are set with old European–cut diamonds and calibre-cut Burmese natural rubies with great attention to detail. The pair is definitely worth collecting, especially for someone who understands and appreciates the art deco period.”

Art Deco ring
An Art Deco ring with 10.01 ct. old European–cut diamond and 0.8 ct. t.w. baguette diamonds, estimate: $101,250–$125,000

“This Art Deco ring has been set with a 10-plus carat old European–cut diamond. It has an L color, VS purity, and fluorescence. Fluorescence in old European–cut diamonds is an advantage, as the stones appear two to three shades whiter than they actually are. The central diamond is flanked by eight diamond baguettes.”

Emerald and diamond choker
A collar with 24.18 cts. t.w. old-cut diamonds, 50.15 cts. t.w. pearls, and 31.15 cts. t.w. emeralds, estimate: $81,250 to $106,250

“This emerald and diamond choker is made in a style that was known to be highly favored by members of the Hyderabadi royal family. Called a ‘guluband’ in India, this particular modern piece created in an old style is set with a fantastic collection of emeralds, natural pearls, and diamonds.”

Burmese set
A suite (also shown at top) with 223.04 cts. t.w. carved Burmese rubies and 21.25 cts. t.w. diamonds, estimate: $48,750–$75,000

“This suite of a carved Burmese ruby and diamond necklace and matching ear pendants are set in a Tutti Frutti–inspired design. Tutti Frutti was the name given to a particular design by Cartier set with carved emeralds, rubies, and sapphires, popular in the art deco era. This necklace is set with Swiss-certified stones, accompanied with matching ear pendants.”

Retro diamond bracelet
Bracelet in handmade gold with approximately 6 cts. t.w. European-cut diamonds, approximately 5.5 cts. t.w. diamond baguettes, and approximately 5.6 cts. t.w. round diamonds, estimate: $78,750–$100,000

“The beauty of this diamond bracelet is in the large center stones, which are old European–cut diamonds, diamond baguettes, and round diamonds. While modern made, the bracelet is created in an impressive retro design typical of Van Cleef & Arpels. The bracelet showcases fantastic handmade craftsmanship, especially in the detail in the white gold band, where every alternate link features a diamond set in a star motif.”
