Antwerp Seizes Parcel of Banned CAR Diamonds

Officials in Antwerp, Belgium, have seized a parcel believed to contain conflict diamonds from the war-torn Central African Republic.

The Kimberley Process banned rough diamonds from CAR in June 2013.

A statement from Antwerp World Diamond Centre said the city is stepping up attempts to prohibit CAR diamonds from entering the local market. It cited a recent Enough Project report that stated CAR diamonds are still finding their way into world markets, often with fake KP certs, through centers with “insufficient controls.”

The organization called “upon all diamond centers to implement the same strict controls on import and export procedures and KP requirements.”
