Alex and Ani Honors American Girl’s 40th Anniversary With Jewelry Collection

Alex and Ani is taking nostalgia and jewelry to an all-time high with its new American Girl collaboration that honors the stories and dolls that made American Girl a classic childhood experience.

The Alex and Ani x American Girl jewelry collection that debuted Wednesday features four of the brand’s iconic first and perhaps most memorable characters: Samantha Parkington, Molly McIntire, Addy Walker, and Kristen Larson.

“American Girl has achieved something really rare by remaining both deeply nostalgic and remarkably relevant,” Alex and Ani CEO Prita Kumar tells JCK. “As its characters continue to inspire audiences across generations, we saw an opportunity to create meaningful keepsakes that honor the brand while inviting fans to celebrate the characters who have shaped their own journeys.”

The Alex and Ani x American Girl jewelry collection comes during American Girl’s milestone 40th anniversary. It is the latest collaboration between the jewelry brand and Mattel, which owns the American Girl brand.

AA American Girl — *The Kristen Larson locket ($54) has a cornflower blue background along with a floral pattern and is engraved with the word, “brave.”*

Each character is represented through a curated capsule jewelry collection. The capsule includes a signature pendant locket necklace with the character’s silhouette and a word that speaks to her personality engraved on the inside. In addition, it has two bracelet styles that the jewelry brand said honors that girl’s unique story and spirit.

The collection also features a collectible American Girl signature print bangle that honors the brand’s 40th anniversary. Retail prices for the collection start at $44 for the bangles, go to $54 for the lockets, and top out at $68 for the three-row bolo bracelets.

For example, the Samantha Parkington capsule features a gingham background on her locket as well as the word “kind.” Parkington is one of the three original American Girl dolls, and her story centers on her life as an orphan growing up in 1904 in New York.

Molly McIntire has a red, green, and black plaid with the word “lovable.” As one of the first American Girl dolls, her story highlights the life of a nine-year-old girl living in Illinois during World War II, while her father is serving as an Army doctor in England.

American Girl bracelets — *The pink hinge bangle ($48) honors the American Girl brand’s 40th anniversary and can be stacked with the collection’s other bracelets.*

Addy Walker has a pink rickrack pattern on her locket, which is engraved with the word, “resilient.” Walker was the first Black American Girl doll, and her story spoke to the courage she had following her family’s escape to freedom at the end of the U.S. Civil War.

Kristen Larson, another of the three original American Girl dolls, has a cornflower blue background with a floral pattern featured on her capsule. Her locket is engraved with the word, “brave.” Her story told of her journey from Sweden to Minnesota during the 1850s.

American Girl began in 1986 by Pleasant Company founder Pleasant T. Rowland with three dolls (Kristen, Samantha, and Molly) who were inspired in part by a trip she took to Colonial Williamsburg. Felicity Merriman was added in 1991 and Walker came in 1993. Eventually, American Girl grew to include dolls, books, toys, and retail stores. Mattel purchased the company in June 1998 for $700 million.
