7 Jewels Worthy of Permanent Wear

Last week, my colleague Emili Vesilind shared the news about Catbird’s new permanent jewelry option. The Brooklyn, N.Y., jewelry store is offering its Sweet Nothing bracelet—a barely-there gold chain—as a welded-on accessory for the wrist (you can do it for your ankle, too).

Since reading about the new offering I’ve seen quite a few folks on Instagram take Catbird up on its new cool idea, many opting to “get zapped” (as Catbird describes its welding process), in the name of friendship or team spirit. (The Instagram team recently did this, and if it’s Eva Chen–approved, you’d have a hard time convincing me otherwise).

Personally, I love the idea—I wear pieces from Catbird’s Sweet Nothing collection, anyway (a choker and an anklet)—and it got me thinking about other jewels I’d love to make “permanent.”

Okay, so dangling earrings and big hunky rings aren’t nearly as practical as a barely-there chain, and I’m definitely missing the point of the “unfussy” premise Catbird is going for here. But when jewels look like these, who needs practicality?

Jane Taylor Cirque Cloud Swing ring
Cirque collection one-of-a-kind Petite Cloud Swing ring in platinum with 1.05 ct. baguette diamond, 0.83 ct. t.w. carré diamonds, and 0.2 ct. t.w. round diamonds, $13,675; Jane Taylor

Toby Pomeroy Eclipse hoop earrings
Eclipse hoop earrings in 14k EcoGold with 0.16 ct. t.w. ideal-cut diamonds, $1,495; Toby Pomeroy
Fernando Jorge Algae pendant
Bloom collection Algae pendant in 18k rose gold with 1.3 cts. t.w. pink tourmaline, rose quartz, and diamonds, $44,880; Fernando Jorge
Dana Bronfman Oculus topaz ring

If these can’t be made permanent (I know in reality a big ring or earrings can’t be welded to your body, but the sentiment is there, right?), they’re at least worthy of a jewelry lover’s proclamation as a new favorite, forever piece.

Alison Antelman Partial Eclipse pendant

Anne Sisteron Sienna earrings
