$52.2 Million New York Sale Culminates Sotheby’s 2015 Fine Jewelry Sales



A 25.87 ct. sugarloaf cabochon Kashmir sapphire and diamond ring was the top lot of the sale, the auction house’s final fine jewelry sale for 2015

The Magnificent Jewels sale that took place on Dec. 9 at Sotheby’s New York was its final jewelry auction of 2015.

The auction brought in $52.2 million in sales, and the auction house’s annual proceeds from its worldwide fine jewelry sales totaled $571 million.

The top lot was a 25.87 ct. sugarloaf cabochon Kashmir sapphire and diamond ring that sold for $5.1 million, exceeding its high estimate of $4.5 million. The sale set an auction record for price-per-carat for a sugarloaf cabochon Kashmir sapphire at $197,990 per carat.

The second-highest lot was a Van Cleef & Arpels platinum and diamond necklace that was commissioned by Egypt’s Queen Nazli in 1939. The necklace, which is set with 217 cts. of diamonds in a sunburst motif, sold for $4.3 million.

Other high performers: A 38.27 ct. emerald-cut diamond ring sold for $4 million; a pair of white gold, chalcedony, sapphire, and diamond cuff bracelets by Suzanne Belperron sold for $526,000; a platinum, white gold, chalcedony, sapphire, and diamond necklace by Suzanne Belperron sold for $430,000; and a platinum and diamond brooch by Bulgari sold for $1.75 million, far exceeding its high estimate of $700,000.
