For some people, having bling cover just their hands, wrists, and necks apparently isn’t enough. And so we bring you five very flashy, very rich, and very dentally challenged individuals who had gems implanted in their mouths—and in two cases, had their teeth actually replaced by diamonds. And before you scoff, please note this list contains some of the biggest celebrities in the world:
In 2010, the man who gave the world an updated version of “Diamonds Are Forever” replaced the entire bottom row of his teeth with diamonds. He later explained to Ellen DeGeneres that he “thought the diamonds were cooler” than regular teeth, as if that is a routine choice people had to make. DeGeneres parried that it might be a little embarrassing when people say, “You got a little kale in your diamonds.” West admitted dentistry does pose a problem, but as he put it: “There is just certain stuff that rock stars are supposed to do.”
As with fellow hip-hop star West, Lil’ Wayne doesn’t just wear a “grill”—he possesses $150,000 of actual diamond teeth, which he claims, he brushes regularly with Colgate. When the singer was sent to jail in 2010, a controversy erupted over whether the gems would have to be removed—and his sentence was even delayed for last minute dental work. But apparently, they stayed.
In 2011, British tabloid The Sun reported that the singer, always looking to make an extra-big splash, had marquise diamonds implanted on the paper called her “gnashers” so she could stand out during a Thierry Mugler Paris fashion show. Mission accomplished; the pretty bizarre results can be seen in the commercial below. (Warning: frank language.)
The teen singer reportedly got a “gold and diamond grill” for six of his teeth in 2011 as a Halloween costume, causing no small amount of consternation to his fans. Things became so heated that the grill’s designer issued a statement on his website: “I do NOT make permanent grills, I only do the ones that are removable, you can put them on and take them off within seconds and they’re for fashion and fun. Relax, your little heart throb is not ruining anything.”
Far less ambitious than some of the people on our list, Indian actress and model Rahki Swant had only a single diamond tooth implanted in 2011. No word on whether it was in tribute to one of India’s top exporting industries, or even the cost, color, or clarity. But in the (mostly Hindi) video below, the Bollywood star proudly displays the results, noting, “I love solitaire. I love diamonds.”
