Cleaners in Bangladesh stumbled upon 280 gold ingots worth £1.17 million ($1.88 million) inside an airplane toilet at Dhaka’s Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.
Armed police were called aboard the plane, which had just landed from Dubai, where they recovered the bullion weighing about 32 kg. Customs officials said in a statement that they knew the gold bars were aboard the aircraft. They believe whoever was transporting them sensed a police presence and panicked, ultimately ditching the booty in the lavatory before fleeing.
Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport seems to be a hotbed of activity for strange discoveries involving gold and other precious items. In the past eight months, more than 100 hauls of gold weighing around 300 kg have been found.
