Transitioning from the bright colors of summer

One of the most welcome signals of summer is bright, juicy color. After quickly tiring of the cold, dark days of winter, those hues are just the medicine needed to instantly feel lighter and happier. What a finicky bunch we are, though: Before August even has the chance to say bye, we’re onto the next thing. And that would be those shades of autumn. They’re not even really all that exciting on their own: You’ve got brown, which, well, you know; a mustardy yellow, which can be downright suffocating if too present; and variations of orange all the way to maroon—actually, those are pretty great all the time. But somehow together, these shades signal the coming of fall, a delicious new season we’ve been waiting all year for.

Those three shades may be to autumn what the holy trinity is to Cajun cooking, but they aren’t the only colors to love this season. Look for ones that are toned down to replace the bright pinks, turquoise, and cerulean of of summer: tan, navy blue, mossy green, anything wine-soaked—colors that can be treated as neutrals because they stand out while also being soft (an oxymoron, I know, but it works).
