Like white clothes, turquoise jewelry used to have a strict seasonal limit. If you wore the summery pieces past Labor Day, you risked looking out of step. Today, however, just as tastemakers flout the outdated fashion rule by reveling in their winter whites, the blue gemstone has transcended its temporal boundary to become relevant year-round.
Designers who showed their collections in Las Vegas in June got the memo. The lines featuring turquoise due out this fall are too numerous to count. Most of them are set with Sleeping Beauty, whose gentle blue hue is the standard-bearer for turquoise, but regardless of the variety, designers are besotted with the gem.
Whether it takes center stage (as in the elegant chandelier earrings by Mateo featured at top), serves as a pleasing backdrop for other gems (cue Doves’ evil eye pendant), or comes in bead form to add a blast of blue to an otherwise straightforward style (see Established’s electrifying Ride or Die necklace), turquoise is virtually guaranteed to thrust any jewelry fan into a deep and very satisfying blue period.
