I was so sure that blue would be crowned Pantone’s 2014 Color of the Year. Rumors that Dazzling Blue, a shade likened to Facebook and New York City’s Citi Bike program, and also a star of Pantone’s Spring 2014 Color Report, would take the cake were proven wrong when the announcement was made that this would be the year of Radiant Orchid. And yet, reports from the spring couture 2014 runway shows in Paris prove that we’re still feeling blue, with Armani Privé showcasing entire ensembles in navy and Giambattista Valli sprinkling in electric blue amongst its flouncy, floral creations. Radiant Orchid was there too, among the feminine pastels and bride-inspired looks, proving yet again the power of Pantone. But we’re talking about blue here. It’s a staple hue—black and white’s slightly more exciting counterpart. And in jewelry, it’s consistently the most popular color in gemstones. Sapphires are often found in engagement rings, worn by brides on their wedding day, and given to loved ones. Blue topaz is an attractive, entrancing color that draws many to seek it out for everyday wear. And the list goes on. So here’s to blue, a color that, even if not given the title of Color of the Year, will never, ever go out of style.
