Trend No. 12: Stud Earrings

It seems odd, how so much can be said of such a simple, small piece of jewelry. But the innocent little stud earring stirs up its fair share of commotion. First, we tire of them (on the red carpet, solitaires are such a disappointment). On the other hand, in real life, we can’t get enough, and we never will.

For those not rocking million-dollar jewels on the red carpet, a simple pair of diamond studs (or CZs) are a jewelry box staple. They add sparkle to any ensemble, and, admittedly, I’ve been impressed by how polished one can look while sporting a pair…even if one is also sporting sweat pants.

Teeny, tiny baubles are a favorite look of late, with delicate, whimsical shapes not only adding something extra to an ensemble but also exuding an air of playfulness. How can a cute little pair of gold anchors not make someone smile?

On the other end of the spectrum are those stud earrings that make a statement. Oversize, blinged out, and completely captivating—not to mention the affinity we (or at least, I) have developed for two-sided stud earring (a la Dior’s Mise en Dior pearls).

The ’80s and ’90s influences have us mixing and matching our earrings now, too. The possibilities are infinite: Wear just one earring; mix a stud in one ear with a drop or ear cuff in another; wear four different studs in each ear, if piercings allow. If you look at stud earrings in the same way as one would a collection of stacking rings, there’s opportunity to make any look a personal expression of style.

So when a customer comes in and says, “Oh, I’m just looking for a pair of studs,” remind her that those just studs will provide a fresh look for a long, long time. Just because they’re small doesn’t mean they’re boring. In fact, they may just be one of the best pieces this industry has to offer.
