Gem Diamonds has reported finding a white 100 ct. Type IIa diamond at its Letšeng mine in Lesotho.
The rough diamond found June 22 is the third one larger than 100 cts. recovered from Letšeng since May. Late that month, the mining company sold a 164 ct. D color Type IIa diamond for $9 million and a 103 ct. yellow diamond on tender.
In an interview with South African TV, Gem Diamonds CEO Clifford Elphick estimated that the latest stone will fetch about $40 a carat, or about $4.5 million.
Gem Diamonds also announced that its diamond exports in June totaled $22 million.
