10 More Silver Jewelry Designers From PeruModa 2014

A last look at pieces spotted at the PeruModa 2014 show in Lima, Peru, April 9–11, that may appeal to buyers.

Joyas Vivac

Headquarters: Lima, Peru

Company age: 25 years

U.S. accounts: 1 in Santa Fe, N.M.

Trade fairs: PeruModa, JCK Las Vegas, and a fair in Santa Fe

Minimum buy-in: 20 pieces

My takeaway: I thought the styles were well made, and found the use of pumpkin/gourds in pieces an interesting concept.

Mitos Joyeria

Headquarters: Lima

Company age: 9 years

U.S. accounts: 30, including ones in San Francisco and in Louisiana

Trade fairs: PeruModa, Los Angeles Gift Show, Hong Kong International Jewellery Show

Minimum buy-in: None to date

My takeaway: The designer sets expired butterfly wings into silver jewelry. I’ve seen this done by one other designer—an Irish one whom I met about 10 years ago at a show in Dublin—and it’s neat way to preserve the beautiful natural colors of the wings, which are set under acrylic. Ten species of butterflies, which are collected by Peruvian natives in the Amazon jungle, are featured in this line, which also has a lovely backstory. While mourning the death of a close relative, the artist saw a lone butterfly in downtown Lima, in a place without any trees or flowers (a butterfly’s go-to habitat). She took the sighting as a message from her deceased relative, imploring her to see the beauty of life again.

Fabienne Bisselbach

Headquarters: Lima

Company age: 3 years

My takeaway: Her modern aesthetic is oversize, sculptural, and, at times, whimsical (see ring below, for example).

Taller Pez de Plata

Company age: 9 years

U.S. accounts: 2 stores

Trade fairs: PeruModa

Minimum buy-in: None to date

My takeaway: I love their Barroco signature style, and think it would be gorgeous in karat gold. This company produced some inspiring headpieces for a runway show that took place during the fair, and religious influences are also evident in the work.

U.S. accounts: No store yet, but does sell to wholesalers

Trade fairs: PeruModa, JCK Las Vegas, and a show in Colombia

My takeaway: This manufacturer is large enough to accommodate big orders and smart enough to contract with some talented designers who turn out fun styles with a modern, youthful appeal.

Urin Huancha

Trade fairs: PeruModa, a show in Colombia, Hong Kong International Jewellery Show

Minimum buy-in: 250 grams of silver per style

My takeaway: This mosaic/inlay jewelry line is inspired by the Incas, the Andes, and the people and colors of Peru, and was a favorite among South American buyers at the fair (and this editor who bought some gifts).

Briselle Hernandez

Headquarters: Lima

Company age: 10 years

U.S. accounts: None to date

Trade fairs: PeruModa

Minimum buy-in: None to date

My takeaway: Briselle is inspired by the traditional Peruvian dance called Marinera, which is evident in the romantic filigree effects in her work. She has some gorgeous hair pieces as well!

Sole Joyas

Headquarters: Lima

Company age: 8 years

U.S. accounts: 2; 1 each in New York City and Miami

Trade fairs: PeruModa

Minimum buy-in: Forgot to ask, sorry

My takeaway: Works with leather and silver, and orange peels! While the idea is neat, I wasn’t smitten with the designs for the American market (though the firm could likely do a custom design), so I’m just showing some U.S.-appropriate leather and silver pieces.
