I feel guilty saying it, but it’s a relief to say so long to Radiant Orchid. Not that the purple hue wasn’t beautiful—it was—but it just never felt like it really caught on for me. Perhaps it wasn’t versatile enough. I hold Pantone to high standards when they select a color of the year, as I imagine many do, and so when 2014’s hue was announced, I prepared to fill my closet with the soft shade of violet. A year has passed, and I’m not sure I own a single thing that’s purple. And purple gemstones didn’t seem to have their moment in the sun so much as I recall emeralds really standing out in 2013, but perhaps that’s just because emerald is such a coveted stone. Whatever the case, here’s hoping Marsala gets its due. The earthy, kind of burnt reddish hue is pretty, though I haven’t decided to love it yet. It seems like it’d be a stronger color for say, housewares, or maybe makeup, more so than fashion, but where gemstones are concerned, this is great news. If amethyst was the gemstone for Radiant Orchid, then I think garnet best represents this 2015 shade. While it’s not the only ideal match—rubellite comes to mind as a close call, too—it’s about darn time garnet, particularly rhodolite, gets its moment, don’t you think? So whether the wine-tinged shade takes over our wardrobes in 2015 remains to be seen, but this selection of jewels is already covet-worthy, no matter what.
