ModCloth Features Transgender Model

ModCloth, the online fashion retailer, is showcasing a transgender model on its site this month, a harbinger of the happy and overdue trend of retailers and brands being more inclusive of the LGBT community in their missions and messages.

Rye Silverman, a trans woman, was featured on the site after applying for #FashionTruth, a campaign that calls itself a “casting call for all” and invites consumers to post pictures of themselves sporting ModCloth duds on social media for the chance to win a gift card and be featured on the site.

Photos of Silverman accompany an interview with her about her style and identity, and a separate page showcases her favorite items, including a dress named after her.

Redken, the hair care brand, and Clean & Clear, the teen-focused skin care company, have also incorporated transgender models into their campaigns.

Tiffany & Co. ran its first ad featuring a same-sex couple this year, so perhaps we can also expect the company to take the lead in the jewelry industry with trans-inclusivity.
