Lucite, Plexiglas, Lacquer & Perspex: Transparent & Translucent Jewelry

The April 2013 issue of Town & Country explains one possible inspiration for the transparent accessories—including jewelry—popular in the spring designer collections: “First came the news that two versions of Cinderella were headed to Broadway (one with glass slippers designed by Stuart Weitzman). Soon after that, a king’s ransom in see-through accessories was included in spring collections.”

Featured in the April 2013 issue of Town & Country is a pair of crystal-accented metal and plastic cuff bracelets from Christian Dior. Also pictured are a Valentino shoe and a Charlotte Olympia bag.

Transparent and translucent plastic designs have received extensive coverage in the fashion press, with multi-page photo spreads in a number of upscale fashion magazines.

Actress Thandie Newton appears in a six-page spread in the April issue of InStyle wearing plastic jewelry in each photo. The spread highlights the variety of plastics in a range of transparent and translucent variations. Above she appears in a Missoni sequined dress accompanied by a wide translucent Lucite cuff of light green from Donna Karan New York.

Newton wears a statement necklace of Plexiglas from Stella McCartney with a top, apron, and skirt from Prada in this photo from the April issue of InStyle.

The April 2013 issue of Marie Claire devotes six pages to transparent accessories: “Revealing soles and bodies, plastic heels, Lucite clutches, and Perspex bijoux are the season’s clear winners.” The only piece of jewelry included is a lavishly crystal-adorned collar-style necklace from Dior.

In a supplementary page “shop the shoot,” the April 2013 issue of Marie Claire provides more clear options: a necklace of clear beads from Marni at Neapolitan Collection and a pair of Michael Kors cuffs of clear Lucite.

The April 2013 issue of Glamour also devotes six pages to transparent accessories. The above photo showcases plastic jewelry: Ben-Amun earrings, a Colette Malouf ring, and a necklace incorporating huge white flowers from Gucci. The model’s ensemble is from Nina Ricci and her clutch from Kotur.

With an icy blue ensemble from Céline, the model in the April issue of Glamour wears a necklace of transparent plastic links from Pono by Joan Goodman plus, “on her right arm: bangles, from top, R.J. Graziano, Pono by Joan Goodman; on her left arm: bangles, from top, R.J. Graziano, Ben-Amun, R.J. Graziano; clutch, Gucci; heels, Givenchy by Riccardo Tisci.”

Even Chanel is producing transparent plastic cuff bracelets, as seen in this photo from the April 2013 issue of Glamour. The model also wears transparent earrings from Alexis Bittar. She wears a Lanvin dress and Valentino heels and is posed with bags from Shourouk, Lena Erziak, and Stella McCartney.

Among the accessories spotlighted in the April 2013 issue of InStyle are these selections: a pair of translucent acrylic bangles from Thale Blanc—one clear, one tinted—and the Dior collar, described as a “metal necklace with lacquer and crystal.”

The March 2013 issue of Elle combines sheer fashions with transparent jewelry in another multi-page spread. In the above photo, Lucite bangles from Alexis Bittar and a “plate necklace” from Erickson Beamon accompany a gossamer silk dress from Blumarine.

A Lucite chain necklace from Michael Kors accompanies a silk chiffon dress from Carolina Herrera in this shot from the March issue of Elle. The sandals are from Sophia Webster.

Four pages are devoted to the trend in the April 15, 2013, issue of New York magazine. Pictured above is a Ben-Amun bangle bracelet and a transparent watch from Swatch. The spread also features the Michael Kors chunky transparent chain.

Among the trends spotlighted by Lucky magazine for spring are clear accents: “So much more wearable than you’d think, see-through accessories are totally playful—and they (obviously) go with everything!” The R.J. Graziano bangles are indeed clear, but the acrylic necklace from Kate Spade New York featured incorporates a mix of bright hues that make it more challenging to coordinate with an ensemble.

The February 2013 issue of Elle features a striped maillot and crewneck worn with red Lucite goggles, red Lucite neck cuff, and red Lucite bracelets, all from Michael Kors.

The red Lucite Michael Kors cuffs also make an appearance in the March 2013 issue of Harper’s Bazaar, along with a red-accented white wristwatch from Dior Timepieces.

A pink Lucite cuff from Juicy Couture is among the accessories featured in the February issue of Marie Claire. Also pictured is a rose gold–plated pink oval crystal “gemstone” bracelet accented with spikes from Mawi.

The March issue of Elle touts “plastic fantastic”—synthetic finishes and amped-up neon hues that give an edge to “prim ladies-who-lunch staples.” The necklace featured is of colorful Lucite with Swarovski crystal detail from Erickson Beamon. The model to the right wears a yellow gold cuff from Lara Bohinc and a white gold and ruby ring from Tacori, demonstrating that plastics do indeed mix with fine jewelry.
