Asymmetry and mismatched shapes comprise the signature style of New York City–based designer Ilana Ariel Sarna of Ilana Ariel jewelry. Sarna debuted her line two years ago, offering what she calls a “current classic” aesthetic complete with negative space and scalloped edges. Sarna learned how to wire-wrap jewelry during high school, but her love for design emerged while studying art therapy at New York University and taking a jewelry-making class on the side. Sarna then went to law school—still taking wax-carving and setting classes for fun—and even honed skills one summer apprenticing for an Israeli jewelry designer. Eventually she made the tough decision to abandon the practice of law and pursue jewelry design. Now she sketches styles for casters to bring to life in 14k and 18k gold with diamonds, tourmalines, sapphires, opals, and emeralds.
