Statement Earrings Steal the Show at the 2015 Emmys

The 67th Primetime Emmy Awards broke new ground for actresses of color, as Viola Davis became the first African American actress to win for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama for her work in How to Get Away With Murder.

The jewelry community had plenty to be excited about, too, as stars embraced memorable jewels. Statement earrings were the jewelry look of the night—everyone was wearing them, including Davis, who wore platinum and diamond chandelier earrings by Neil Lane. Other notable pairs were spotted on Veep actress and winner for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, who wore platinum and diamonds by Chopard; Taraji P. Henson, nominee for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama for her work in Empire, wore Neil Lane platinum and diamond drop earrings; Top Chef host Padma Lakshmi wore Fred Leighton diamond pendant earrings; Modern Family actress Sofia Vergara wore Lorraine Schwartz white and champagne diamond earrings, and Jane the Virgin actress Gina Rodriguez wore Forevermark diamond earrings.

Though diamonds were the stone of the night, several actresses wowed in colored gemstones that matched their dresses. Modern Family actress Sarah Hyland wore Lorraine Schwartz ruby earrings and The Mindy Project creator and actress Mindy Kaling wore a pair of Neil Lane earrings in platinum, diamonds, and citrine. Former Miss USA and Miss Universe Olivia Culpo also went for the monochromatic look, pairing her white gown with South Sea pearl earrings by Yoko London.

Platinum also had a grand showing, with Davis, Louis-Dreyfus, Henson, and Kaling all sporting designs with the metal. Also in platinum: Scandal actress Kerry Washington in diamond studs and rings by Harry Winston; Game of Thrones nominee for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama series Lena Headey in Harry Kotlar diamond studs; and Mad Men Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama series nominee Elisabeth Moss in diamond jewels from Beladora.

Other notable looks came from singer Joanna Newsom, who wore Butani diamond earrings and gold cuffs by Irene Neuwirth on each wrist, and American Horror Story: Freak Show actress Emma Roberts, who wore vintage diamond bracelets, rings, a long necklace, and a starburst brooch.

One complaint from jewelry industry folks, many of whom live-tweeted about the red carpet and ceremony using #emmyjewelry: a shocking lack of statement necklaces. One did show up—on Jane Lynch, winner of Outstanding Host for a Reality or Reality-Competition Program for her work on Hollywood Game Night; she wore a Carrera y Carrera diamond and white gold piece.

As Zaiken Jewelry designer Malak Atut tweeted, “Dear ladies of the Emmys – your necks feel lonely and overlooked. Please dress them appropriately next year.”
