California Jeweler Arrested for Alleged Stone Switch

The jeweler is accused of replacing two diamonds with moissanite

The owner of Jewelry Unlimited in Ventura, Calif., has been arrested for grand theft for allegedly switching diamonds for moissanite in rings that had come in for repair.

According to the Ventura Police Department street crimes unit, a woman reported that a diamond in her wedding ring had been switched for a moissanite after bringing it to the store for repairs.

Following that, the department said, a second woman recounted a similar allegation: She took a family heirloom ring with a diamond into the store for a minor repair and allegedly found her diamond had been switched for a moissanite.

The estimated total loss was $8,000, the department said. Owner Ara Ghazarian was taken into custody on two counts of grand theft.

Ghazarian could not be reached for comment at press time.
