OHIO JEWELERS ANNOUNCE PLANS FOR COLUMBUS SHOW

The Columbus Jewelry Show will be held Aug. 25-27 at the Greater Columbus Convention Center, Columbus, Ohio.

An educational program on Aug. 25 will feature the following presentations: “Gemological Association of America Workshop,” 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; “A Day With Diamonds,” presented by GIA and sponsored by the Diamond Promotion Service, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; “The Israeli Diamond Connection,” moderated by the Israel Diamond Institute, 10 a.m. to noon; “Computer Applications for Jewelry Store Management,” moderated by Lynn Underwood of San Diego, Cal., 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; “Introduction to Insurance Documentation by the Retail Jeweler,” presented by the American Society of Appraisers in cooperation with the Appraisal Task Force of the Jewelers Vigilance Committee, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; “Managing for Profit and Increased Cash Flow in the ’90s,” presented by GIA Advanced Retail Management Systems, 1-3 p.m.; “Are You Covered?” presented by Jewelers Mutual Insurance Co., 1-4:45 p.m.; and “Clarity-Enhanced Diamonds,” presented by Ron Yehuda of Yehuda Diamond Corp., New York City, 2-4 p.m.

William E. Boyajian, president of GIA, will be the keynote speaker at a symposium the following day. Sales trainer Shane Decker will present “Winners Never Quit” at a breakfast seminar on the final day.

Also scheduled during the show are the seventh annual Mid-America Golf Outing and an exhibitor/buyer cocktail reception, both on Aug. 25, and Jewelers Night Out with entertainment by the Van Dells Aug. 26.

A silent auction will raise money to benefit the Ohio Jewelers Association’s GEMPAC political action committee. In addition, the association will announce the winners in its first jewelry design contest.

L.A. MART ANNOUNCES NOVEMBER SCHEDULE

Retailers can do last-minute Christmas ordering and get a jump on spring holidays during the L.A. Mart Fall Gift, Decorative Accessories and Furniture Market, scheduled for Sept. 17-19.

Buyers will see thousands of lines in more than 300 showrooms, including general giftware, tabletops and decorative accessories. The show is open only to trade buyers.

FOREIGN SHOW UPDATE

Business was strong at the Asian International Gift Fair, held May 2-5 in Singapore. The fair, which was held in conjunction with the Asian International Stationery Fair and the Asian International Handicraft Fair, attracted 17,946 buyers from 46 countries. Next year’s show is scheduled for April 23-26 in the Singapore International Convention & Exhibition Centre. The 16th Hong Kong Jewelry and Watch Fair will be held Sept. 17-21 in the Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Center. The show will feature more than 1,300 exhibitors of jewelry, loose stones, watches, objets d’art, antiques, machinery and equipment. Special events will include seminars on jewelry design and gemstone technology, a jewelry design competition and social activities. International Jewellery London will be held Sept. 3-6 at Earls Court Two, London, England. International Jewellery Singapore will be held Aug. 24-27 in Suntec City, Singapore. Organizers expect 35,000 buyers to attend the fair, which has the endorsement of the Singapore Trade Development Board, the Diamond Exchange of Singapore and the Singapore Jewellers Association. A highlight will be the display of three of the world’s rarest stones, a collection known as Red Diamonds and valued at $20 million. The dates for the Japan Jewellery Fair have been changed to Sept. 20-22. The show, to be held in the Pacifico Yokohama in Yokohama, was originally scheduled to begin two days later. Jewellery Taipei will be held Nov. 11-14 in the Grand Hotel in Taipei, Taiwan. The exhibition of fine jewelry, gold, gems and watches will be hosted by the Taipei Jewelers’ Association and supported by the Gemological Institute of America in Taipei. The Shanghai International Watch and Jewellery Fair is scheduled for Nov. 30 to Dec. 3 in Shanghai, China. The show, to be held in the Shanghai Centre, is open to the public and is expected to attract 62,000 buyers, including 9,000 trade buyers. Organizers have announced revised dates for the third Mideast Watch & Jewellery Fair. The fair will be held Oct. 3-7, two weeks earlier than originally scheduled, in Sharjah.
