The Central African Republic government has signed a 99-year treaty with Libya allowing a company created by Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi’s government to dig for oil, uranium, diamonds, gold and other minerals, Reuters reported Friday, Sept. 13.
Mines Minister André Nalké Dorogo reportedly said the deal was signed in June, a year after Colonel Qaddafi sent troops to help President Ange-Félix Patassé crush a rebellion. The deal is a setback to France, which dominated the former colony from independence in 1960 until its troops left in 1998.
