Printing Requirements and Mechanical Specifications

Materials Requested:
Film: Furnish one piece (per color) dimensionally stable offset negatives of identical .004 gauge with 4-hairline register marks 1/4″ from the image. Film must be right reading emulsion down. Recommend 120 line screen for black and 2-color and 133 line screen for 4-color. Supply offset progressive proofs, head to foot reproduction, of the film furnished. Two-color proofs (color down first). Four-color proofing sequence should be that which produces the maximum trap. Cromalinr, match print or other off-press proofs must contain a SWOP/GATF approved color bar. Publication will not be responsible for color reproduction if color proof is not supplied with film. For 4-color advertisements the sum percentage of tone values should not exceed 300% (with proper gray balance); and no more than one color should be solid. In preparing copy, restrict thin lines and small lettering with a minimum of colors. Use the key color for the shape of letters and make lettering in subordinate colors slightly larger than the key color. Avoid small letters with fine serifs when using reverse lettering.

Offset material is available immediately after publication or anytime up to one year. All material is destroyed without notice 12 months after last use. Material requests must be in writing.

Mechanical Services
For conversion to offset negative from offset positive, Cronar, Scotchprint, engravings, negative with emulsion on wrong side, repro proof, or original art requiring one line camera exposure: $75 per ad per color. For conversion to negative from original camera ready art (other than above) ask for the production charge based on number of camera exposures and other work required. In addition, any permanent modifications to supplied, finished artwork is also subject to production charges.

Inserts
Black and white earned frequency rate applies when inserts are furnished in accordance with mechanical specifications. Consult publisher for rates on all other inserts. Maximum weight of stock (basis 25 x 38) 4-page inserts or less – 100 lb. coated, 80 lb. uncoated. For inserts of more than two thicknesses – 80 lb. coated, 60 lb. uncoated. Inserts requiring backup must be printed on white, smooth finish, coated stock. Thickness of insert stock cannot exceed .006.” No device may be used (other than varnishing) to make the insert stock heavier or less flexible than as sold by its manufacturer under standard specifications. Furnish 2-page (single leaf) inserts 8 1/4″ wide by 11″ deep. If back up is required, furnish 2-up sheet size 16 1/2″ by 11″. Complete 4-page inserts are to be supplied folded measuring 8 1/4″ wide by 11″ deep. On spread inserts where backup is required, furnish 2-up sheet size 16 1/2″ wide by 11″. In final binding, publisher trims 1/8″ from all 4 sides. Live area measures 7 1/2″ x 10 1/4″. Hold all live matter 3/8″ from bindery edge and trim edges.

Back up charge: $800 on single leaf insert, $950 on spread insert, net, not subject to agency commission. Pack on skids (no cartons) and protect from weather and shifting load in transit. Consult publisher for quantity and other material details. All supplied inserts must meet postal requirements. All business reply cards must be bar coded. Consult publisher and/or post office for specifications before printing inserts.

Ship all inserts prepaid to: Brown Printing Co., c/o JCK Magazine, 2300 Brown Avenue, Waseca, MN 56093. Label insert shipments with magazine name, quantity and issue date. Publication will not be responsible for shortage of inserts if not properly marked with quantities and weight. Inserts must jog to head.
