De Beers Group’s Science & Technology division has debuted SynthDetect 2, a next-generation desktop diamond-screening instrument that the company says offers faster testing, greater automation, and broader jewelry-handling capabilities than earlier versions.
According to De Beers, the instrument is designed to help diamond manufacturers, laboratories, and retailers verify natural diamonds and identify lab-grown or synthetic stones. The company noted that SynthDetect 2 can test both loose diamonds and mounted jewelry—including rings, earrings, bracelets, pendants, brooches, bangles, necklaces, and tennis bracelets.
The device uses time-resolved photoluminescence technology to analyze stones and display results on a high-resolution touchscreen. It offers one of three results: “natural,” “synthetic,” or “refer” (meaning the stone requires additional examination) and can test diamonds ranging from 0.001 ct. to 10 ct. in all cuts.
The new instrument expands on the capabilities of the original SynthDetect and SynthDetect XL systems, introduced in 2017 and 2018, which enabled users to screen multiple stones in mounted jewelry without probing individual diamonds. The company notes that the latest version can accommodate a wider range of jewelry products while improving throughput and efficiency.
De Beers adds that the model also is faster than its predecessors. A full tray scan that previously took approximately a half hour now can be completed in less than five minutes, while the instrument’s increased automation reduces the need for operator input. The system automatically generates screening reports and receives software updates remotely.
Sarandos Gouvelis, senior vice president of science and technology at De Beers Group, said the company worked with industry participants during development to ensure the device addressed both technical screening requirements and operational workflows.
