A mall full of holiday shoppers was startled in Sanford,
Fla., on Dec. 12 when a Mayors Jewelers store fell victim to a smash-and-grab
theft.
Sanford Police Sergeant David Morgetstern tells JCK that two
men entered Seminole Towne Center Mall at 12:30 p.m. They used a sledgehammer
to smash jewelry cases, took watches from the cases, and ran out of the mall.
The suspects took about $7,600 worth of watches and
Morgetstern says they left their sledgehammer behind. “Everything happened in
about 15 seconds,” he says. “It was a pretty brazen attack to do at a mall in
the middle of the day.”
Police obtained video surveillance and are hoping the images
will lead to arrests.
Eva Hartling, director of public relations and events at
Birks & Mayors, tells JCK Mayors is relying on local police to investigate
the case. “This is a very unfortunate situation and we’re glad no one was
injured as a result,” Hartling says.
