Jewels From Philanthropist Joanna Carson, Johnny’s Ex-Wife, Head to Auction

Share

John Moran Auctioneers of Monrovia, Calif., is set to host a notable sale for the jewelry and fine art world, The Estate of Joanna Carson. Taking place on March 3, the auction will feature over 400 lots that reflect the “less is more” values and philanthropic legacy of the former model, who was married to Johnny Carson during the height of his Tonight Show fame.

Joanna Carson, who died last summer, was a top fashion model in New York before she married Johnny Carson in 1972 (they would divorce in the mid ’80s). While her public image was often shaped by her high-profile life, those who knew her recall a woman of understated charm and immense generosity. Over five decades, she directed nearly $200 million to charitable causes, including the Women’s Rape Treatment Center and the Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation.

Jewelry lots in the Carson auction boast both midcentury and modern beauties, including a Cartier diamond necklace (pictured at top) and lapis cross, previously owned by Clare Boothe Luce, as well as multiple pieces from Van Cleef & Arpels—a gem-set floral brooch and a turquoise and diamond ring. Other highlights include a David Webb 18k gold collar necklace and a diamond-accented gold and coral bracelet.

True to Carson’s spirit of giving, proceeds from the auction will benefit Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, the David Geffen Foundation, and the Cher Foundation.
