The Future Is Silver

Share

When jewelers want to go big, bold, and sculptural, they often turn to silver, which lends itself to creating pieces that are oversize and artistic. That’s both for obvious reasons (the price, duh!) and more nuanced ones: In sharp contrast to gold’s old-world appeal, silver’s white shine has long evoked a sense of modernity.

As a reflective metal, silver tends to work best in minimalist designs that make up for their lack of ornament with sweeping curves and gleaming surfaces—not unlike the sleek white and spare interiors that tend to characterize futuristic spaces in the popular imagination.

In that spirit, we’ve cherry-picked a handful of new silver jewels that wouldn’t look out of place in a galactic setting, trillions of miles away. Call them space-age accessories for style-obsessed earthlings. Nanu nanu!

The trio of hammered silver shapes that form these dramatic linear earrings, designed and handcrafted in Bali, are meant to recall the evil eye.

Déhanche

Like the shapely Brancusi cuff bracelet featured at top, these Hollyhock earrings take inspiration from Déhanche’s sculptural belts. In the brand’s words, they speak “to the woman who values design over ornament, presence over excess.”
