Britt’s Pick: Claudia Mae’s Tourmaline Locket

How’s this for an all-in-one? Claudie Mae’s heart-shape locket features both of October’s birthstones, all tied up in a gorgeous package designed to hold a precious little something.

The locket, from Claudia Mae’s limited-release Love Locked collection, has an air of modern nostalgia—something we’re all a bit obsessed with right now—with its bubbly heart center in a vivid, jelly-like red-pink tourmaline. A trio of opal hearts cast their milky glow beneath the tourmaline, demonstrating the ease with which October’s gems can be worn together, each shade of tourmaline bringing out a single color from opal’s prism (in this case, we get a glorious pink radiance).

If this piece had a soundtrack, it might sound something like Elvis’ “Burning Love”—fiery and in no way subtle, it’s a hunka something to hold close, its glimmer imagined to have a heartbeat all its own.

“Lockets have always been vessels for love and memory—since the 16th century, they’ve been used to hold something precious or symbolic, like portraits, locks of hair, or perfume,” says designer Claudia Kronfeld. “Each Love Locked locket is set with a one-of-a-kind tourmaline from the Aricanga mine in Brazil and hand-cut into heart shapes. The padlock top captures the essence of the design, symbolizing a way to lock in what is most precious to you.”

What might a wearer keep in this locket, I wonder? While antique and vintage lockets beg for black-and-white photos of loved ones, I’m imagining something more contemporary for this one: a shrunken copy of a child’s brightly colored drawing, your kid’s first lost tooth, a tiny crystal for calm or strength, a folded-up note from a significant other.

Lockets have their own special way of being utterly personal, their contents easily changed whenever the mood suits. As for the creator of this gorgeous keepsake, Kronfeld tells JCK, “In my personal locket, I keep a photo of my grandparents. It makes me feel close to them and the rest of my family, no matter where I am or what I’m doing.”
