Roger Dubuis Strikes Gold at Monterey Car Week

When it comes to high-end clients, there’s an adage in the Swiss watch world: Follow the cars. And last month, we did—directly to Monterey Car Week, the epicenter of car culture every August, when the annual collector gathering takes over California’s Monterey Peninsula.

As guests of the Swiss watchmaker Roger Dubuis, we were there to attend a party at the Lamborghini Villa, an exclusive event space located beside Pebble Beach’s 18th fairway, where the Italian carmaker hosts clients and friends during the year’s most anticipated car-collector event.

This year, Roger Dubuis, which introduced its partnership with Lamborghini in 2017, used the occasion of car week to unveil its newest timepiece, the Excalibur Spider Flyback Chronograph, a $135,000 wristwatch exemplifying the brand’s high horology positioning.

Housed in a 45 mm 18k pink gold case that comes on a black rubber strap, the skeletonized piece features a flyback movement with a racing spirit: In addition to patented technologies such as a 120° rotating minute counter at 3 o’clock, a second braking system for chronograph stability, and a tilted balance wheel with diamond-coated silicon components, the pièce de résistance is a supercar-inspired rotor visible through the caseback.

Limited to 88 pieces, the watch is designed expressly to appeal to lovers of motor sports, fast cars, and high-end mechanics—not unlike the bright orange vintage Lambo, a 1971 Miura P400 S, that served as the villa’s undeniable showpiece.

The caseback of Roger Dubuis’ new Excalibur Spider Flyback Chronograph features a five-armed rotor, like the rims of a supercar’s wheel.

That the Excalibur Slider Flyback Chronograph is encased in rose gold is de rigueur. The precious metal, which recently broke a new price record when it surpassed $3,500 an ounce (a bull run to match Lambo’s beloved raging bull logo?), is the metal of choice for petrol heads drawn to cars—and watches—with aesthetic flair. Sure, a steel Daytona is nice. But for someone craving a racing machine with a little less restraint, Roger Dubuis’ newest Excalibur model, with its openworked dial and five-armed rotor, designed to evoke the rims of a supercar’s wheels, is the ticket.
