Montserrat New York Expands Into Lab-Grown Diamonds

Montserrat New York, the fine jewelry line that melds Spanish style with a New York attitude, is expanding into lab-grown diamond jewelry this fall.

Carolina Cordón-Bouzán, who cofounded the company along with Gayle Yelon in 2018, said in a statement: “We realized that there are very few brands offering lab-grown diamond jewelry in unique, fashion-forward styles. As of now, the only two offerings for diamond jewelry are either high-priced diamond jewelry or mass-market, basic jewelry styles featuring lab-grown diamonds.”

The Autumn/Winter 2021 collection, entitled Our Love Letter to New York, is the company’s ode to the “city’s infectious energy, wild nights, and resilient hustle,” as its founders put it. Inspired by Italian jewelry designer Elsa Peretti, Montserrat New York’s lab-grown collection channels the designer’s socialite existence on Manhattan as well as the time she spent in the Costa Brava coastal region of Spain, where Cordón-Bouzán herself spent summers as a child.

Each piece is made using 18k gold–plated sterling silver and will be offered in both white and yellow gold. Prices range from $180 to $595. The collection, which bowed Sept. 7, is available exclusively on the company’s website.

The new collection also establishes Montserrat New York’s commitment to sustainability. “Lab-grown diamonds are a more sustainable alternative to mined diamonds,” said Cordón-Bouzán in the same statement. “Rather than excavating our Earth for diamonds, we are replicating the environment in which diamonds are created by growing our diamonds in machines that mimic the pressure of the Earth and the temperature of the sun. This means that the diamonds used in this collection, and all collections moving forward, are 100% real diamonds without causing excavatory harm to the planet.”

In an effort to decrease its carbon footprint, Montserrat New York has teamed with Terrapass to purchase carbon offsets and fund renewable energy that works to reduce the impact of its greenhouse gas emissions.

“We want to bring attainable, sustainable luxury to our customers,” added Cordón-Bouzán in the same statement. “We feel that the jewelry industry is outdated and lagging behind other industries that are looking for alternative, sustainable solutions to their environmentally harmful practices.”
