Former Zale Corp. vice chairman Leo Fields died on Feb. 12, according to a local obit. He was 88.
The nephew of the chain’s founder, M.B. Zale, Fields worked for Zale Corp. starting in 1942, taking time out to fight in the Korean War. He eventually attained the post of vice chairman and, together with M.B.’s sons Donny and Marvin, is given credit for helping spur the chain’s enormous growth. He retired in 1986 to establish Weisberg & Fields, an investment advisory firm.
A prominent philanthropist, Fields served on the boards of Brandeis University, the Dallas Home for the Jewish Aged Foundation, the Dallas Jewish Community Foundation, Greenhill School, the Lamplighter School, and the M.B. and Edna Zale Foundation. He also served as the vice chair of the international board of advisors for the Institute for Social and Economic Policy in the Middle East at Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government.
Fields is survived by his wife of 63 years, Bobbie Fields; three children; six grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
