In a new initiative spurred by concern over varying grading standards, British jewelry groups will regularly quiz the different labs about their procedures.
According to British Jewellers’ Association (BJA) chief executive Simon Rainer, the questionnaire will cover in-house equipment, number of years in the business, qualification and experience of grading personnel and directors, access to master stones, grading standards used, quality management systems, and capacity and wait times.
The responses will be collated and disseminated to members of the BJA and the National Association of Goldsmiths, Rainer says. The intention is to collect the information annually.
“This is about giving the trade a range of information for them to choose [labs],” Rainer says.
If labs don’t reply, they will be marked on the list as “no reply received.”
