Birks Comps Jump 24 Percent

Birks Group saw an impressive sales increase in its second quarter, with comps soaring 24 percent and net sales jumping 14.3 percent.

The company still posted a loss of $4 million for fiscal 2015’s second quarter (ended Sept. 27), which was nevertheless narrower than the prior year’s loss of $7.7 million. Gross profit was $55.4 million, from $139.7 million worth of sales.

During a conference call following the results’ release, CEO Jean-Christophe Bedos said the company’s past investments have begun to pay off. He called the company’s new “engaging” store format for its Mayor’s Jewelers chain in the United States “very successful,” noting the company just opened a new Mayor’s store in Sarasota, Fla.
