While supporters of the Marketplace Fairness Act—legislation that requires online companies to collect sales tax—had hoped to pass the bill in the upcoming lame duck session of Congress, House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) says it’s dead for the time being.
“The speaker has made clear in the past he has significant concerns about the bill, and it won’t move forward this year,” a Boehner spokesperson told Roll Call.
The bill passed the Senate last year, but has since been stuck in the House. Outgoing Senate majority leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) has said that he plans to attach it to much-pass legislation, like the Internet Tax Freedom Act. Supporters like the National Retail Federation say they are not giving up and plan a big push by the end of the year.
Analysts have suggested the bill will have a tougher time of passing in the next Congress.
