Diamond District Robbery May Have Stemmed From Feud, Reports Say

The audacious midday jewelry heist that closed 47th Street for hours on Nov. 11 may have stemmed from one jeweler’s desire to scare a rival, according to reports in two New York City newspapers.

“Detectives are exploring whether a rival seller may have hired” the two men who robbed the store at 23 W. 47th St., Daily News quoted police sources.

New York Post went even further, asserting another jeweler had already confessed to police that he hired the gunman and his accomplice, but said he only wanted to scare the store owner in a “beef over money and jewelry.”

“The hired goons must have gotten greedy when they saw the bling and money ripe for picking,” sources reportedly told the newspaper.

The News says that police are also considering other angles, including whether it was an inside job.

“The store was not on the ground floor, so there has to be some reason why they went there,” one police source told the paper. “Someone knew the fact they had stuff there.”

The two suspects are reportedly still at large. Police released new video of the better-dressed suspect walking down the street:

Anyone with information about the robbery is asked to call the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers hotline at 800-577-TIPS, or go to NYPDcrimestoppers.com.
