AGA to Host Lab-Grown Diamond Seminar in Las Vegas on May 29

The Accredited Gemologists Association will hold a seminar on Thursday, May 29, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., at the Platinum Hotel in Las Vegas to address growing concerns about unidentified lab-grown diamonds. Speakers include: Dr. James Shigley of GIA; Tom Chatham of Chatham Created Gems; Dusan Simic of Analytical Gemology and Jewelry; and Ronnie Vanderlinden of the Diamond Manufacturer’s and Importers Association and Diamex.

Increased production of lab-grown diamonds is causing concern in industry, as some are being sold as natural stones, and the trade can struggle with identification.

“Now is the time to pay attention to this growing market,” AGA president Stuart Robertson tells the press. Robertson has observed the increasing role of China in the lab-grown sector and believes the trade will see additional growth—as well as greater availability of HPHT-grown diamonds.

A hands-on session will allow attendees to examine a variety of lab-grown diamonds—both HPHT and chemical vapor deposition—and will be followed by a cocktail and hors d’oeuvres reception.

AGA and Gem-A members who register before May 15 receive a discounted rate of $95, while nonmembers will be charged $125. After May 15, rates rise to $105 for AGA and Gem-A and $150 for nonmembers. Visit AGA’s website for more information. The Platinum Hotel is at 211 E. Flamingo Road at Koval Lane in Las Vegas.
