Swiss Watchmaker Raymond Weil Dies

Raymond Weil, watch marketing pioneer and founder of the famed eponymous Swiss timepiece brand, died Jan. 26 at age 87.

In 1976, as the Swiss industry was engulfed in crisis, the designer founded Raymond Weil Genève, built around his vision that watches could be a luxury accessory. Today, the company is still run by his family, with son-in-law Olivier Bernheim its president and grandsons Elie and Pierre Bernheim serving as directors.

Until 1995, Weil was president of the Exhibitors Committee of the Basel International Watch and Jewellery Fair.

“Raymond Weil was a self-made man,” said company president and CEO Olivier Bernheim in a statement. “He was my mentor, and I learned so much from him. His legacy and enthusiasm will live on through our family, his brand, its team over the world, and all of those who wear the watch that bears his name.”
