Christie’s New York Set to Auction 52 Carat Golconda Diamond

A 52.58 ct. D-color internally flawless Golconda diamond will headline the Christie’s Magnificent Jewels sale in New York City on Dec. 10.

The octagonal-cut gem is expected to fetch between $9.5 million and $12.5 million, owing to its provenance. The fabled mines of ancient Golconda, a city in south-central India, in what today is the state of Hyderabad, have produced some of history’s most famous diamonds, including the Hope, the Koh-i-Noor, and the Regent.

The 500-lot sale, expected to achieve in excess of $45 million, will also feature a collection of Leviev diamond jewelry. The star lot is a cushion-cut D-color internally flawless diamond ring of 26.72 cts. set in platinum, flanked on either side by a shield-shaped diamond. The ring is estimated at $4 million–$6 million.

The Leviev collection also includes a diamond pendant necklace with a pear-shape D-color VVS1 diamond of 22.12 cts. strung on a necklace of pear-shape and oval-cut diamonds totaling 38.76 cts., estimated at $2.5 million–$3.5 million.

But it’s not all about colorless gems. From a collection of colorful Cartier jewels owned by Marion Rumsey Cartier, the daughter of Pierre Cartier, to one of Cartier’s legendary Tutti Frutti bracelets, an Art Deco gem expected to fetch between $300,000 and $500,000, the auction includes plenty of high-octane color.

The sale will cap a record-breaking year for jewelry auctions globally. “Beginning with the historic sale of the Princie Diamond in New York in April to The Orange in Geneva this November, collectors worldwide paid record prices to acquire the rarest and finest gemstones that appeared on the auction block,” Rahul Kadakia, head of jewelry for Christie’s Americas and Switzerland, said in a statement. “On Dec. 10, our team of specialists looks forward to offering collectors yet another opportunity to participate in a wonderfully curated sale.”
