Borsheims Appoints New CEO

Borsheims director of merchandising Karen Goracke has been named president and CEO of the Omaha, Neb., jeweler.

Her appointment becomes effective Jan. 1. She replaces Susan Jacques, who will assume the role of president and CEO of the Gemological Institute of America.

Borsheims, a one-store retailer that will add a second store in November, is owned by Berkshire-Hathaway. The holding company’s chairman, Warren Buffett, announced the appointment.

Goracke began her career at Borsheims as a sales associate in the gift department. She eventually moved to inventory supervisor and watch buyer. She now oversees all jewelry, fine gift, and accessory buying.

In a statement, Jacques praised her successor, saying her “expertise and experience will help in guiding the company to new heights.”

“Everyone at Borsheims wishes nothing but the best for Susan as she retires from the retail world and begins a new chapter of her life and career,” said Borsheims spokeswoman Adrienne Fay in a statement. “This is a full circle for Susan. She began her education at GIA in 1980 and the jewelry industry has long been a passion for her. We are honored that she is leading the premier institution in our industry.”
