Anglo American Withdraws From Alaska Gold Mine

Anglo American has pulled out of the Pebble mine, the controversial proposed gold and copper project in Alaska.

The mine is planned to be constructed by the Pebble Partnership, made up of Anglo American and Northern Dynasty,  in Alaska’s Bristol Bay watershed area. The region is known for salmon fishing, and the perceived threat to the habitat and the fishing industry has long drawn opposition.

Some environmental groups have asked jewelers not to source from it. Tiffany and Co. has become such a mine opponent that it bought ads urging the mine not be built, and in 2008, it hosted a screening for an anti-mine film.

Anglo American’s withdrawal doesn’t mean the project is dead, though. Northern Dynasty announced plans to go ahead with the mine as 100 percent owner.
