Online Sales Tax Law Won’t Pass House, Cosponsor Says

A Republican cosponsor of the Marketplace Fairness Act, which would require online companies to charge sales tax, now says it likely won’t pass the House.

“My belief right now is this bill will not pass in the next year,” bill cosponsor Rep. Morgan Griffith (R-Va.) told WSLS-TV. “Sometimes you have to do what you think is right, but I don’t think we will see this bill pass the floor of the House.”

The Senate passed its version on April 22, and President Obama has indicated his support for the measure.

But the legislation, which is supported by Jewelers of America, has run into opposition from House Republicans and Speaker John Boehner.

Supporters have said it’s possible the bill might be attached to other legislation to improve its chances of passage.
