Fashion’s Night Out Goes on Hiatus

Fashion’s Night Out is taking a time-out.

The four-year-old shopping event, meant as a glitzy annual celebration of the design and fashion worlds and a boost for the economy, is going on hiatus “in order to enable retailers to channel their resources to other priorities,” its official website said.

The site gave no word if organizers plan to reinstate the event in 2014, if ever. It will still take place in select international cities.

Among the jewelers that took part in the 2012 edition: Efva Attling New York, Swarovski Elements, and Henri Bendel. In 2011, local New York City stores like Greenwhich Jewelers and Jack Vartanian held FNO-themed events.

The event was launched in New York City at the height of the 2009 recession. By 2012, it had expanded to stores in more than 500 cities nationwide and 30 cities throughout the world.

A note on FNO’s site stipulates: “The Fashion’s Night Out brand continues to be a highly valued and protected asset, and it cannot be used without Condé Nast’s permission.” The event’s sponsors included Condé Nast title Vogue, the Council of Fashion Designers of America, and New York & Company.

“It was a celebration of shopping during a time when it was sorely needed,” said the site. “We’d like to say thank you from the bottom of our hearts for supporting the initiative, and for helping us to raise over $1.5 million for the New York City AIDS Fund in the New York Community.”
